Team Uganda at the Liberia Independence Day Cup, Suwon
Team Uganda finished unbeaten at the Liberia Independence Day Cup (LIDC) 2026, winning all three group matches at Ajou University Soccer Field in Suwon on Sunday 26 July 2026. The tournament formed part of the Liberian community’s Independence Day celebrations and brought African communities across South Korea together under the shared values of friendship, unity and sportsmanship.

Three wins from three matches, under the leadership of Coach Isma Uptop and Coach Sadat Zimula. Uganda played in Group B alongside Ghana, Zimbabwe and Guinea; Group A brought together Kenya, Tanzania, Liberia and Burundi.
Outstanding performances
Raymond Mukasa was Team Uganda’s standout performer, leading the attack and scoring the majority of the team’s goals through the tournament. Our youngest player, aged just 15, also deserves mention — his confidence, composure and commitment across the day were commendable, and an encouraging sign for the next generation of Ugandan football talent in South Korea.
Appreciation
The Directorate of Sport & Entertainment thanks Coach Isma Uptop and Coach Sadat Zimula for their technical leadership; Captain Jeffrey Lumu for leading the team on and off the field; the tournament organising committee led by Senior Musa; and the welfare team — Josephine Nakitende (General Secretary), Juanita Ariella Kwagala Murungi, Stella, Rita and Queen — whose support ensured the team’s welfare throughout the day. Thanks also to the entire Ugandan community in South Korea for turning up and cheering the team on.
A message of solidarity
During the Uganda–Guinea match, a player from Team Guinea sustained a serious injury. In line with the message shared by the Liberian Independence Day Celebration Committee, we ask our community to join the wider African community in praying for his full and speedy recovery, and to extend messages of encouragement and solidarity to our Guinean brothers at this difficult time. Sport reminds us that while we compete on the field, we remain one African family beyond it.
Looking ahead
Team Uganda’s next major challenge is the Seoul Elite Tournament, a Korean-organised competition scheduled for 6 September 2026. Beyond that, we await the announcement of the Korea World Cup Tournament. The Directorate has also called for planning to begin on an East African Pamoja Community Football Tournament — a Uganda-led initiative to bring East African communities in South Korea together, with a deliberate emphasis on professional organisation, player welfare, fairness and safety.
